Slot Glossary — A-Z Guide to Slot Terminology
Whether you are a newcomer to Egyptian-themed slots or a seasoned player, understanding the terminology is essential. This comprehensive glossary covers every key term you will encounter in our slot reviews, strategy guides, and bonus articles.
A
Autoplay — A feature that allows you to set a predetermined number of spins to play automatically at a fixed bet size. Useful for extended sessions but always monitor your balance. Some jurisdictions have restricted or banned autoplay features.
B
Bankroll — The total amount of money you have set aside for gambling. Effective bankroll management is the foundation of responsible gambling.
Base Game — The standard gameplay phase (as opposed to bonus features or free spins). Most of your spins will occur in the base game.
Bet Level — A multiplier that increases your bet per line. Combined with coin value and paylines, it determines your total stake per spin.
Bonus Buy — A feature that allows you to pay a premium (typically 60x–100x your bet) to trigger the bonus round instantly, bypassing the base game. See our Bonus Buy Slots category. Not available in all jurisdictions (banned in the UK).
Bonus Round — A special feature triggered during gameplay, often involving free spins, pick-me games, or multiplier trails. Egyptian slots like Book of Dead are famous for their bonus rounds with expanding symbols.
C
Cascading Reels — A mechanic where winning symbols are removed and replaced by new symbols falling from above, allowing multiple wins from a single spin. Also known as Avalanche, Tumbling Reels, or Collapsing Reels.
Coin Value — The monetary value assigned to each coin. Multiplied by coins per line and number of paylines to calculate total bet.
E
Expanding Symbol — A symbol that expands to cover an entire reel (or multiple positions) when it forms part of a win. A signature feature in Egyptian slots like Legacy of Dead.
Expanding Wild — A wild symbol that expands to fill the entire reel, substituting for other symbols to create additional wins.
F
Free Spins — Bonus spins awarded without deducting from your balance. Triggered by landing scatter symbols (typically 3 or more). In Egyptian slots, free spins often come with special features like expanding symbols or multipliers.
G
Gamble Feature — An optional feature allowing you to risk your winnings on a 50/50 bet (e.g., red/black card guess). Doubles your win if correct, forfeits it if wrong. Common in Book of Ra Deluxe and similar games.
H
High Volatility — See Volatility. High-volatility slots pay out less frequently but with larger individual wins. Most Egyptian “Book of” slots fall into this category.
Hit Frequency — The percentage of spins that result in any win. A slot with 25% hit frequency pays out on roughly 1 in 4 spins. Lower hit frequency generally correlates with higher volatility.
J
Jackpot (Progressive) — A prize pool that grows with each bet placed across a network of connected slots. Can reach millions. Mega Moolah holds the record for the largest online progressive jackpot. See Progressive Jackpot Slots.
M
Max Win — The maximum possible payout from a single spin, usually expressed as a multiplier of the total bet (e.g., 5,000x). Book of Dead offers a max win of 5,000x.
Megaways — A variable reel mechanic licensed from Big Time Gaming offering up to 117,649 ways to win per spin. The number of symbols per reel changes with each spin. See Megaways Slots.
Multiplier — A factor that increases your winnings. A 3x multiplier triples the base payout. Multipliers often appear during free spins or bonus rounds.
P
Payline — A line across the reels on which matching symbols must land to form a winning combination. Classic slots may have 1–5 paylines; modern video slots often have 10–50 or more. Megaways slots replace paylines with “ways to win.”
Paytable — A screen within the slot showing the value of each symbol, payline patterns, and bonus feature rules. Always review the paytable before playing a new slot.
R
RNG (Random Number Generator) — The software algorithm that ensures every spin is completely random and independent. Licensed slots must use certified RNGs tested by independent auditors (e.g., eCOGRA, iTech Labs).
RTP (Return to Player) — The theoretical percentage of all wagered money that a slot will pay back to players over time. An RTP of 96% means the slot returns £96 for every £100 wagered on average. Use our RTP Calculator to model expected returns. Key RTPs: Book of Dead 96.21%, Eye of Horus 96.31%, Legacy of Dead 96.58%.
S
Scatter Symbol — A special symbol that pays regardless of payline position. In most Egyptian slots, landing 3+ scatters triggers free spins. Often represented by a Book (Book of Dead, Book of Ra) or Eye symbol.
Stacked Symbols — Symbols that appear in stacks of 2–4 on a reel, increasing the chance of multiple matching symbols landing simultaneously.
V
Video Slot — A modern slot with 5+ reels, advanced graphics, animations, and multiple bonus features. The vast majority of online slots today are video slots.
Volatility (Variance) — A measure of risk. Low volatility = frequent small wins. Medium volatility = balanced. High volatility = infrequent but large wins. Most Egyptian slots are medium-high to high volatility. Your choice should align with your bankroll size and risk tolerance.
W
Wagering Requirement — The number of times you must wager a bonus amount before withdrawing winnings. See our Bonus Guide and Wagering Requirement Calculator for details.
Ways to Win — An alternative to paylines where any matching symbols on adjacent reels (left to right) form a win, regardless of position. Megaways slots use this system.
Wild Symbol — A symbol that substitutes for most other symbols to help form winning combinations. Wilds do not usually substitute for scatter or bonus symbols.
